Portraits by night

This project is kind of a traditional portrait reversal. It displays portraits of close people sleeping in order to reflect the intimacy by another state, than by the mood of someone having their eyes wide opened, the expressions revealed.

The state of sleep is a resting and relaxation moment in the day. It marks the transition to another world, unknown by any other person… The sitter is not with us anymore. He becomes a sleeper: he is in another world, animated by dreams. He is sound asleep in this other universe.

This drawing project attempts to keep these moments that are rarely revealed.

We are like in the backstage of the ‘little theatre of life’.

The image of someone sleeping unveils this person, but differently than by the look, the smile or the facial expressions. When we are sleeping, the muscles are relaxed. Thus we can see that in these portraits by night, we have another point of view of the person. We are looking deeply in the immense intimacy of the sleeper.
